Relational Rod Trays

Cuisenaire Rods are a well known mathematics learning tool used worldwide. These trays were developed to expand the usefulness of these rods.

Idea

Cuisenaire Rods and a paper 'hundreds chart' (10cm x 10cm) are a popular educational tool for exploring mathematical concepts at the elementary level. However, educators have run into issues with these paper mats over the years: they don't always print exactly 10cmx10cm so rods don’t fit, young students don't always understand where the edges of the hundreds chart are, and treating this paper as disposable adds up to a waste over the years!

Solution

We designed and manufactured a low-cost, impact resistant, injection molded Relational Rod Tray that fit Cuisenaire-style Rods. They include swappable card inserts, catering to a variety of teaching styles. Some educators want a blank tray, a counting up hundreds chart tray, a counting down hundreds chart tray, and a customizable hundreds chart tray.

Relational Rod Trays support the development of number sense through the exploration of mathematical concepts such as relationships between numbers, composing and decomposing numbers, working with patterns, additive reasoning, square numbers, properties of odd/even numbers, fractions, measuring, symmetry, and many more!
